Attacking drills & game analysis - All with Mike Friday
With scrum play, you’ve got 8 players in a small area of the pitch so you’ve got the space created for you, it’s then how you best utilize that in order to create further space or a line break opportunity. With Line outs, everybody’s on their feet, how do you look to create space to then attack space? This is where you as the coach, can be creative, to come up with ideas and work with your players to come up with the solution to create an effective line break.

Kevin Buckley USAI really like this video and the other videos by Coach Mike (now the USA Sevens coach) – he really has a lot of good ideas. For my 13 year olds, the idea of getting the ball back deep really helped and got them into a mindset of moving immediately into space after they pass. Being in Texas a lot of the kids haven’t played before. So I made one modification to help the kids run deep and get out of the way of the next pass: I start with the kids going to the back of the same line that they started in. This helps them stay out of the way of the next pass. (So at the start the kids in the leftmost line stay in the leftmost line, the kids in the right line stay in the rightmost line). After they have done that for a while, they get the idea of getting deep quickly and you can tell them to go to the back of the line that they have passed to (as Coach Mike shows in the video).
Matt Singer SingaporeGreat drills and Mike’s quality as a coach comes through as he emphasises the key components of every skill being practised. I have shared this video with my 7s squad to help them visualise the drills, to maximise the limited training time we have together, and to get them thinking about decision making in attack.
