7's Defence - All with Eric Rush
The defensive system has to be sound, it needs to be one where everyone knows what’s happening and where all the players trust each other. These days, most teams play with a sweeper, where there’s 6 defenders in the front line and the sweeper in behind. Pretty much every international 7’s side use this 6-up, sweeper defence. It’s not rocket science, you can make slight modifications to it, but I’ll show you the way that I’m comfortable with the defence working.

Justin Whitton USABeen a 15s player/ coach for 20 years, just now studying to coach 7s. Quick question, at the 12:00 minute mark of the video both defenders are coming up and pushing to create pressure on the wing. Is the second defender in that scenario the sweeper coming up in line, or the 5th player in the 6 man line? Just wasn’t clear to me. Thanks.
Henry Adams South AfricaGreat coaching Eric. This defense module will be a huge help.
Hone Edwards AustraliaThis video was very helpful and has given me a simple way to structure my defence patterns
Rob Chudzik USAGreat to see the recent installments of 7s videos from Rush and Friday. Quality instruction from quality coaches! Would love to see one on attack support sytems.
Guy Wolfe IrelandProbably the best module on Defence in the shortened game, your likely to find.Competition, repetition, easy learning,so simple,so quick,so effective. Rushie explains respectfully and enthusiastically. No better way to learn, how to use space by constantly passing under pressure. Full marks.
Matt Mortenson CanadaGood basic introduction to a 6/1 defence. Fixating on inside & outside shoulders is a good cue for the young guys. Could have thrown the sweeper into the drill instead of just the small bit at the end. Its always helpful to watch sweeper track and slow play
