Rugby 7s legend, Eric Rush, demonstrates how to build a defensive structure from scratch. Here’s what Eric Says:

“The defensive system has to be sound, it needs to be one where everyone knows what’s happening and where all the players trust each other. These days, most teams play with a sweeper, where there’s 6 defenders in the front line and the sweeper in behind. Pretty much every international 7’s side use this 6-up, sweeper defence. It’s not rocket science, you can make slight modifications to it, but I’ll show you the way that I’m comfortable with the defence working.”

Eric Rush is a legend of the 7s game. Well respected as one of the greatest ever 7s players having played in 60 tournaments for the All Blacks 7s winning 2 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and a World Cup 7s winners medal as well as playing 9 tests for the All Blacks at XVs. Rush's levels of commitment to training and conditioning are the stuff of legend and it is this work ethic which kept him in the professional game until the age of 39.
